HOW TO MARKET A SMALL BUSINESS ONLINE IN SOUTH AFRICA

Most 'digital marketing checklists' throw twenty tactics at you with no sense of priority. Here's the order we actually recommend to South African small business clients, based on what moves revenue fastest per rand spent.

1. Google Business Profile (free, do this today)

If you serve local customers and haven't claimed your Google Business Profile, this is the single highest-return marketing action available to you, and it costs nothing. See our full guide on how to get your business on Google Maps.

2. A website that actually converts (R4,500–R15,000, do this next)

Not a brochure — a website with a clear call to action, fast load times, and your service area named explicitly. This is the foundation everything else builds on: ads, social, and SEO all send traffic somewhere, and if that somewhere doesn't convert, you're paying to lose money.

3. Local SEO (ongoing, compounds over time)

Once the site exists, invest in the technical and content work that gets it ranking — schema markup, location-specific content, and consistent NAP details across the web. This is slower than ads but the return compounds for years, unlike ad spend which stops the moment you stop paying.

4. Reviews and word of mouth, actively managed

Ask for Google reviews after every positive interaction. This is marketing too — reviews are a direct local-ranking factor and the single most trusted signal for a customer deciding between you and a competitor.

5. Paid ads — only once the above is solid

Google Ads and Meta Ads work, but they're expensive per click in competitive categories and the money stops working the second you stop paying. Running ads to a slow, unoptimised website is the most common way small businesses waste an ad budget — fix the destination before you pay for traffic to it.
