WHAT THIS TOOL MEASURES

This tool runs your URL through Google's PageSpeed Insights API — the same engine Google uses to evaluate websites for Core Web Vitals ranking signals. The scores it returns are not vanity metrics: they are the signals Google uses when deciding whether to rank your website above or below a competitor's.

For South African businesses, particularly those competing in local markets like George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay, and the broader Garden Route, page speed is a decisive ranking factor. South African mobile networks vary significantly in speed and reliability. A site that loads in 1.2 seconds on a fibre connection in Cape Town may take 6–8 seconds on a 4G connection in rural Western Cape — and Google tests on a simulated slow mobile network by design.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CORE WEB VITALS

Google measures three Core Web Vitals that directly affect your search ranking:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): How long it takes for the largest visible element to load. Should be under 2.5 seconds. Template-built sites frequently score 4–8 seconds on LCP on mobile.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): How much the page jumps around as it loads — images popping in, fonts swapping, elements shifting. A CLS above 0.1 is a ranking penalty. Common cause: images without explicit width/height attributes.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): How quickly the page responds to clicks and taps. Heavy JavaScript frameworks and third-party scripts are the main cause of poor INP scores.

WHAT A BAD SCORE MEANS IN PRACTICE

A mobile PageSpeed score below 50 means Google is actively deprioritising your site in mobile search results — which represents over 70% of South African web traffic. For a George or Garden Route business targeting local customers, this translates directly into missed leads, missed bookings, and a phone that rings less than it should.

The audit below shows you exactly which issues are dragging your score down, ordered by impact. The most common problems on South African small business websites: unoptimised images (JPEG files served at full resolution to mobile devices), render-blocking JavaScript from page builders and analytics scripts, no image lazy-loading, and fonts loaded from Google Fonts without preconnect or subsetting.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE AUDIT?

If your site scores below 70 on mobile, the audit will surface the specific issues costing you ranking positions. Some of these you can fix yourself — resizing images, removing unused plugins, enabling caching. Others require a developer.

A rebuild on a proper static generation framework (Next.js, Astro) consistently achieves 90–100 on PageSpeed because the performance problems that plague template builders — excess JavaScript, server- side rendering on every request, unoptimised asset delivery — are structural. You can improve a template site's score incrementally, but hitting 95+ on mobile with a Wix or Elementor site requires working against the platform's own architecture.
