HOW TO GET YOUR BUSINESS ON GOOGLE MAPS
Getting your business onto Google Maps is free and takes about 15 minutes. Ranking well once you're there is the part that takes actual work. Here's both halves.
Step 1: Create your Google Business Profile
Go to google.com/business, sign in, and search for your business to see if a listing already exists (customers or Google's systems sometimes create one automatically). If not, create a new one.
Choose the most specific category available — 'Web Design Company' ranks better for that intent than the generic 'Website Designer', for example. Category choice is one of the most underrated ranking levers.
Step 2: Verify your listing
Google verifies via postcard (5–14 days), phone, or email depending on your business type and location. Don't skip this — an unverified listing won't show in the Local Pack.
Step 3: Complete every field
Hours, service area, website link, phone number, business description, and at least 5–10 real photos. Incomplete profiles are deprioritised by Google's ranking systems relative to complete ones — this is one of the most direct, controllable factors in the whole process.
Step 4: Build review velocity
The businesses at the top of the Local Pack almost always have both more reviews and more recent reviews than competitors. Ask for reviews directly, right after a positive interaction — don't wait for customers to think of it themselves.
Step 5: Link a real, fast website
Google Maps rankings and website quality are connected — Google's local ranking systems do weigh your website's relevance and technical quality. A slow, generic, or non-existent website is a ceiling on how well your Maps listing can rank, no matter how many reviews you collect.
FAQ
- Is it free to list my business on Google Maps?
- Yes, creating and verifying a Google Business Profile is completely free. Paid Google Ads can appear alongside Maps results but are separate from organic Local Pack ranking.
- Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?
- The most common reasons: the listing isn't verified yet, the category chosen is too generic, the profile is incomplete, or there simply aren't enough reviews yet relative to competitors in the same search.
- Do I need a website to rank on Google Maps?
- You can technically list a business without one, but a fast, properly configured website measurably helps Local Pack ranking and gives you a page to convert the traffic Maps sends you.
