HOW TO WRITE A GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE DESCRIPTION THAT RANKS
Google Business Profile gives you a 750-character business description most owners fill in as an afterthought — usually a generic sentence with no keywords and no local specificity. That's a wasted opportunity. Here's how to write one that actually helps.
Lead with what you do and where, in the first sentence
Google (and skimming customers) weight the opening of the description most heavily. 'ABC Plumbing is a family-run plumbing business serving George and the surrounding Garden Route' beats 'Welcome to ABC Plumbing, we have been serving our customers since...' — get the what and where in immediately.
Name your specific services, not just your category
Don't just say 'we offer plumbing services' — name them: 'burst pipe repairs, geyser installation, blocked drain clearing, and bathroom renovations'. Specific service terms are exactly what customers type into Google, and matching that language in your profile helps you surface for those exact searches.
Include your service area explicitly, more than once
Name the town, and name the surrounding areas you actually serve — 'George, Wilderness, and the surrounding Garden Route' rather than just 'George'. This directly helps you surface for near-me searches from neighbouring towns your business also covers.
Skip the fluff Google's systems don't weight
'We pride ourselves on excellent customer service' and similar generic phrases waste characters that could carry real information. Every sentence should tell Google or a customer something specific and true about your business.
FAQ
- Can I use keywords I don't actually offer, just to rank for them?
- No — Google's guidelines explicitly prohibit keyword-stuffing a Business Profile description with services you don't genuinely offer, and it risks a suspension. Only include what's real.
- How often should I update my Google Business Profile description?
- Revisit it whenever your services change meaningfully, but there's no ranking benefit to editing it just for the sake of activity — that comes from posts and reviews instead.
- Does the description field actually affect ranking, or just conversion?
- Both, to different degrees — the description helps customers decide to click, while your business category, services list, and review content carry more direct ranking weight. Worth doing well regardless.
